30 hours: 10 Modules of 3 hours each

Module 1
Intro to summer school organisation, student profiles, programmes, expectations
Module 2
Language awareness – functional grammar (including levels)
Module 3
Teaching methods for L2 learners - lesson planning
Module 4
Class management for Language Learning with teenagers
Module 5
Class content – using published materials and resources provided
Module 6
Language awareness – vocabulary
Module 7
Class content – authentic materials (focus on Irish culture and excursions)
Module 8
Language awareness – pronunciation
Module 9
Skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing
Module 10
Evaluating errors, tests and testing for summer school students
Home assignments
Learner Journal / Reading assignments / Preparation for peer & micro teaching / reflection and feedback / research into authentic materials /
Assessed tasks during course to include
- Class management
- Language teaching methodology
- Language awareness
- Skills lesson using authentic material
Certification
A certificate is issued on successful completion of all 4 assessed tasks to a standard agreed by ACELS, and full attendance of, and participation in, the course.
Post Course Requirement - Teaching Observation Element
In your first summer school teaching position and assessed observation will be carried out by the Director of Studies / Principal or a senior teacher, using a STC Report Pro Forma. At this point, your Certificate and your STC Report will be submitted to ACELS where you will be registered to teach English as a Foreign Language to Secondary Level students.
